2006 ROAD TO MEMPHIS COMPETITION

Folks, it’s that time of year again when we select two blues acts to represent the State of Maine at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis.

The reason for putting this on my personal website is pretty straightforward: I’m personally asking my fellow Maine blues musicians to participate this year. Yes, I know that most of us, myself included, dislike “battle of the bands” formats (and would probably rather have a root canal !)

Having said that, please allow me to point out a couple truths:

(1)   We really need to become masters of our own fates

(2)   There is strength in numbers

You guys proved that last June when so many of you stepped up to the plate and made the First Annual Maine Blues Festival the success it that it clearly was, and that’s my point: That one weekend in June went far in establishing the legitimacy and credibility of the Maine blues scene.

And so I’m saying, let’s keep the momentum by making this year’s competition one for the books.

Here are the details as they currently stand:

The competition will be held on Sunday, 29 October 2006.

We have three venues identified as sites. They are: the Midnight Blues Club in Auburn, the Time Out Pub in Rockland, and Bray’s Brew Pub in Naples.

The reason that we have three venues are that we hope to have enough blues acts to actually need multiple sites, and if so, we will then have a Finals Competition the following weekend at one of them. This is typically how it’s done in other states where the blues gets lots of  public support and publicity (HINT, HINT, HINT !!!).

So please consider competing; yeah, it’s about somebody winning, but the broader and more important theme is about who participates.

Signing up is simple – just let me know at kdkimball@aol.com

Cheers!

THE FIRST ANNUAL MAINE BLUES FESTIVAL!!!

Those of you who have known me for any length of time know that I have had long-cherished dream of creating a blues festival that is exclusively of and about Maine blues musicians.

Well, it's finally here! I got lucky, or more accurately, blessed by finding the right combination of fanastic people to work with me on this project: Mike Bray, Monica Schwab, Wendy Gallant, and a slew of other great people whom I will mention in due course on this website.

But for now I want to tell you about the festival itself:

It's Friday and Saturday, June 16-17, in Naples on Route 302 in the Causeway area. Thirty bands, ten venues!

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 on the 17th, and kids 12 and under are free. Tix get you a wristband which in turn gets you into all venues.

Friday night kicks the fest off with live blues acts in four venues, and Saturday's festivities begin at 11:00 AM and go all day and into the the night until 1:00 AM. Most venues are within walking distance from one another, plus we'll have shuttle free shuttle buses between all venues.

How cool is that?

SATURDAY JUNE 17TH

BRAY’S BREW PUB

LEX  & JOE BLUESWING

2:20 - 3:30

Versatility is the keyword for this outfit. One minute they sound like smooth swing bands from the 1930’s and 40’s; the next minute they sound like the “rave up” blues bands of the fifties and beyond.

MARK “GUITAR”’ MILLER BLUES BAND

ARLO WEST

7:50 - 8:50

When Arlo West straps on a six-string, he personifies the term “guitar slinger”. One of Maine’s most respected blues artists with long-standing popularity both here and Europe, Arlo plays bare-knuckle Texas blues with a take-no-prisoners attitude.

JERRY SMITH:

 ALL-STAR BLUES JAM

9:00 - close

At the heart of the blues experience is the “jam”. This is the part where fellow blues players take turns on the stage and let whatever happens, well, happen!

It’s completely unrehearsed, and that’s the point. This is as spontaneous, as fresh as it gets. It also provides the players a rare chance to “musically socialize”; it’s rare because most times these musicians are working all around the state.

The jam host is one of the most respected musicians around, guitarist and vocalist Jerry Smith, and he’s backed up by veteran drummer Lefty Plourde and blues bassist Bob Higgins.

CAUSEWAY MARINA

THE BLIND LEMONS

2:30 – 3:30

With front man, multi-instrumentalist, and all-around “Force-of-Nature” Tom Renino at the helm the ‘Lemons were there at the beginning of the blues scene at the now legendary Raoul’s Roadside Attraction. This band of seasoned pros helped kick-start the blues in Maine!

BLUE STEEL EXPRESS

3:50 – 4:50

Blue Steel Express is one of the longest continually running blues acts in Maine. Formed in the early nineties, the ‘Express features sly vocals, slashing slide guitar, tight arrangements and a lot of humor and audience interaction.

THE TOM O’CONNELL BLUES BAND

5:10 – 6:10

Want authentic “Old School” blues? This band is all about just that. Fronted by vocalist and harp virtuoso Tom O’Connell and directed by Maine blues mainstay Mike Hayward (“Red Light Revue”), this is the original stuff (minus the scratches on the 78’s.)

LUTHER JAMES

6:30 – 7:30

Luther James is a master luthier (that’s a “guitar builder”), custom blues harp microphone designer, and longtime blues jam host. Today he steps out of the background with his own distinctive brand of “slow burn” electric blues.

(207) 783 - 9142

BONNIE EDWARDS AND THE PRACTICAL CATS

7:45 – 9:00

Wanna dance? This is “jump-swing” blues from a six-piece band with a big-band attitude. Formed over twenty years ago, the ‘Cats have been featured in countless music and art festivals throughout the state and region.

Zoot suits are optional.

DEB DANUSKI

6:00 – 7:00

Music critics have characterized Deb’s warm vocal style as both “sly” and “understated”, and that’s the point. Backed up by only guitar and flute, Deb is able to bring the subtleties and nuances of blues vocals into sharp focus.

dldanuski@aol.com

THE MOJO ROMEOS

7:20 – 8:20

Originally called “The

Shackdaddies”, the ‘Romeos are a semi-acoustic blues band that feature four accomplished instrumentalists, two of whom are frontmen in their own right. Think John Mayall’s “Turning Point” album.

Meantone is Original Graveyard Blues. A duo comprised of Meantone: fretless, slide guitar and throat and Young Bret on drums and percussion. Meantone's unique guitar tuning along with Young Bret’s maximal playing of his minimalist drum kit make you think there’s at least three to four people in the band and makes Meantone unique and fresh.

Matt has been a longtime fixture in the Maine blues scene, backing up other Maine blues acts on harp and occasional vocals. Finally, and at long last, Matt has his own band!  He brings to the stage an absolute passion and commitment to the blues that is impossible to resist!

THE BLUESHOUNDS

New Kevin and the Steeldrivers CD

New acoustic CD with Deb, Kevin, and Ralph

*

Fri, Jul. 22 2005

It's been a busy summer, so far, but we've managed to come up with a couple of new home-grown CD's.

The Kevin and the Steeldrivers CD was recorded in pieces over the course of a year or so, and all save one of the tracks were recorded "live in the studio", which is to say, no overdubs, no studio tricks. The last track was recorded during our performance at the 2005 Old Port Festival, and overall I think this CD accurately captures what the Steeldrivers are all about.

I'm especially proud of Deb's CD. This is something I've had in mind for a long time. I've always felt that there is a special magic that happens to Deb's voice in an acoustic setting and we seldom get to explore that in the more conventional electric bar gigs or big outdoor stage formats. Some of the best moments on this CD occur when Ralph's flute serves as a counterpoint to Deb's phrasing.

New Website
Sun, Jun. 5 2005

Well, the obvious news is the website itself!

For those of you who know me, you also know that I've joined the cyber-age kicking and screaming all the way. Oh, well, I guess even dinosaurs gotta wear shoes eventually. (Don't ask me what that means - I'm not sure myself)

So here is a new work-in-progress; if you have any photos of the the crew, incriminating or otherwise, send 'em along.

See you soon,

Cheers!

Kevin
